Riding in the Ashdown Forest

The Ashdown Forest is a horse rider’s paradise offering some of the most beautiful and spectacular riding in South East England. It is a vast area of over 6,500 acres of open heathland and wooded ghylls (valleys). It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and special scientific interest. It has a wide range of rare plants, birds and wildlife and deer still roam freely.

Riding on the Forest is by permit only and riding permits can be supplied. A requirement of the permit is that the rider and horse have third party liability insurance. This is usually provided with your standard horse insurance but can also be obtained by joining an organisation such as the British Horse Society. A copy of your third party insurance is required at time of booking. We regret we are unable to provide a Forest Permit without this insurance.

There are many beautiful rides to do across the Forest and the colours of the Forest constantly change with the seasons the year through. Ride across the fire breaks on the open heathland of gorse and heather, cross streams at the bottom of the valleys and take quiet tracks up through the pretty woodland areas. Ride to the spots made famous in AA Milne’s Winnie the Pooh stories – the Enchanted Place, North Pole and Eeyor’s Gloomy Place as well as the many Clumps, the Airman’s Grave and Nutley Windmill. The choices are endless and we have maps of the Forest available and are happy to help you plan your rides and routes to explore the Forest.

Guiding Service

Whilst many riders will be more than happy to take a map and ride out and explore on their own with some initial directions, we appreciate that some may prefer to be accompanied. We therefore also offer a guiding service where we will accompany you to ensure you visit the best spots and get the most out of your stay.

The Ashdown Forest terrain is varied with open heathland and forested valleys. It is hilly and moderately rugged in places. We can tailor rides of various lengths for all levels of competence. Your horses do, however, need to be relatively fit as there is a lot of hill work involved to see the spectacular views.
